When Scott Mayfield got to practice in Bridgeport Tuesday morning, he was told “treat it like a morning skate.” So while the rest of his minor league teammates were doing their daily drills, the defenseman was focusing on the possibility he was going to play in the Big Show hours later.
Mayfield scored his first NHL goal and tacked on two PIM in Saturday’s 4-3 overtime loss to Buffalo.
Mayfield was sent down just before the All-Star break, and the move was likely made just to get some extra ice time. He’ll now rejoin the parent club, but will be a borderline lineup memeber on a nightly basis, limiting any potential fantasy upside.
Mayfield was recalled from AHL Bridgeport on Friday.
Mayfield’s recall comes after Eric Boulton was placed on injured reserve, and he will offer the Islanders another option on the right side of defense in the absence of Johnny Boychuk.
