When it was over, when the thrill of playing his first game at the Air Canada Centre had culminated with a 5-2 victory for his Team USA squad over Slovakia, goalie Joseph Woll got an education in Maple Leafs history.

Wisconsin sophomore center Luke Kunin will serve as captain while Boston University sophomore defenseman Charlie McAvoy and Boston College sophomore center Colin White will be alternate captains. McAvoy and White are the only returnees from the 2016 U.S. team.

A St. Louis native, Woll counts himself a fan of NHL star netminders Carey Price and Braden Holtby, and the 6-foot-2, 198-pounder describes himself as a mixture of an athletic and positional goalie. The 17-year-old was thrilled to see Leafs head coach Mike Babcock walk down the draft floor and into the stands to introduce himself to Woll’s family.
They call him Brick, and when you’re a goalie with Woll as your last name, that’s a good thing.
