Vitale (concussion) has been ruled out for the season by Red Wings general manager Ken Holland, Mike Halford of NBCSports.com reports.
Vitale suffered the concussion after a fight with Boston’s Kevan Miller last October, and was limited to just the one game.
The Detroit Red Wings have acquired Joe Vitale, the 20th pick, and the 53rd from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for Pavel Datsyuk and the 16th overall pick.
Vitale (concussion-related issues) will miss the remainder of the season, Sarah McLellan of AZCentral reports. “There’s been no real measurable progress,” general manager Don Maloney said.
Vitale was placed on injured reserve on Monday, but it wasn’t announced until Wednesday that the 30-year-old forward suffered a fractured orbital bone in a fight with Boston’s Kevan Miller.
The Arizona Coyotes have recalled forward Matthias Plachta from Springfield of the AHL and placed center Joe Vitale on injured reserve with an upper body injury.
“At times when you’re at center, you expend a lot of energy down low in the defensive end and the offensive end,” Vitale said. “At wing, it’s about having that poise and that position awareness. When the opportunity comes to skate you take that, so hopefully it will cater to my game as far as having a good burst of speed, being on pucks first, and I hope it adds to the physicality of my game.”
